Key Bible text
“And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him–the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord–”
Isaiah 11:2 AMPC
The Spirit of knowledge or the spirit that instils knowledge
Scriptural passage
“This is why the Scriptures say: Things never discovered or heard of before, things beyond our ability to imagine — these are the many things God has in store for all his lovers.
But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.
After all, who can really see into a person’s heart and know his hidden impulses except for that person’s spirit?
So it is with God. His thoughts and secrets are only fully understood by his Spirit, the Spirit of God.
For we did not receive the spirit of this world system but the Spirit of God so that we might come to understand and experience all that grace has lavished upon us.
And we articulate these realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and not with the words taught by human wisdom.
We join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words.
Someone living on an entirely human level rejects the revelations of God’s Spirit, for they make no sense to him. He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit.
Those who live in the Spirit are able to carefully evaluate all things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God.
For Who has ever intimately known the mind of the Lord Yahweh well enough to become his counsellor? Christ has, and we possess Christ’s perceptions.”
1 Corinthians 2:9-16 TPT
The spirit of knowledge is not the worldly, popular or scientific one
It is the knowledge of the Holy which is brought to us by the Holy Spirit
How can encounter the Spirit of knowledge?
Knowledge is by intimacy and fellowship with the Source of knowledge
“I do not call you servants (slaves) any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing (working out). But I have called you My friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from My Father. [I have revealed to you everything that I have learned from Him.]”
John 15:15 AMPC
2. Knowledge is by revelation
Verse 9 of 1 Cor 2 says “But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things".
“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,”
Ephesians 1:17 NKJV
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of revelation
After all, who can really see into a person’s heart and know his hidden impulses except for that person’s spirit? So it is with God. His thoughts and secrets are only fully understood by his Spirit, the Spirit of God.”
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 TPT
What is revealed to us?
What are we supposed to know?
Truths about God
“Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”
Psalms 100:3 NKJV
And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”
John 8:32 AMPC
And His words
“And we articulate these realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and not with the words taught by human wisdom. We join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words.”
1 Corinthians 2:13 TPT
Know the hope of His calling
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power”
Ephesians 1:18-19 NKJV
This is the extent of what is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit
Verse 9
This is why the Scriptures say: Things never discovered or heard of before, things beyond our ability to imagine — these are the many things God has in store for all his lovers.
3. Knowledge comes from the fear of the Lord
When you know the Lord you would reverently fear Him.
Lack of knowledge of who the Lord is is what makes people misbehave
“And because they thought it was worthless to embrace the true knowledge of God, God gave them over to a worthless mindset, to break all rules of proper conduct.”
Romans 1:28 TPT
When people lack knowledge, they subsequently don’t fear the Lord. Then they find themselves in captivity to sin and the devil
“Therefore my people have gone into captivity Because they have no knowledge; Their honourable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.”
Isaiah 5:13 NKJV
The power of the Spirit of knowledge
1. Knowledge brings exploits
“Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery, but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.”
Daniel 11:32 NKJV
2. The Spirit of knowledge helps you to dominate
“The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.”
Proverbs 24:5 NLT
“O how I love and treasure your law; throughout the day I fill my heart with its light! By considering your commands I have an edge over my enemies, for I take seriously everything you say. You have given me more understanding than those who teach me, for I’ve absorbed your eye-opening revelation.”
Psalms 119:97-99 TPT
3. It brings Liberty and freedom,
“And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”
John 8:32 AMPC
How does the Spirit of knowledge manifest in us?
It’s by obedience and living like Jesus
“Here’s how we can be sure that we’ve truly come to know God: if we keep his commands. If someone claims, “I have come to know God by experience,” yet doesn’t keep God’s commands, he is a phoney and the truth finds no place in him.
But the love of God will be perfected within the one who obeys God’s Word.
We can be sure that we’ve truly come to live in intimacy with God, not just by saying, “I am intimate with God,” but by walking in the footsteps of Jesus.”
1 John 2:3-6 TPT
How did it manifest in Jesus?
The Spirit of Knowledge showed Jesus what was on people's heart
“But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. “No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart”
John 2:24-25 NLT
Jesus knew about Nathaniel even before Philip brought him to Him
“As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
John 1:47-48 NLT
The spirit of the fear of the Lord
What type of fear?
When people hear about the fear of the Lord, they mistake it for the cringing type of fear that makes you see God as unapproachable or as a being devoid of love. The Spirit of God endows us with the ability to fear God in these ways
Having the reverential fear of the Lord
“You shall fear [and worship] the Lord your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect]; you shall serve Him and cling to Him [hold tightly to Him, be united with Him], and you shall swear [oaths] by His name.”
Deuteronomy 10:20 AMP
“You shall fear [only] the Lord your God, and you shall serve Him [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect] and swear [oaths] by His name [alone].”
Deuteronomy 6:13 AMP
Obedient fear of the Lord
“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.”
Deuteronomy 28:1 NKJV
The results of the fear of the Lord
Power to overcome sin and to please the Lord
“The reverent fear and worshipful awe of the Lord [includes] the hatred of evil; pride, arrogance, the evil way, and perverted and twisted speech I hate.”
Proverbs 8:13 AMPC
“Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.”
Proverbs 16:6 NLT
No wonder David admonished his son when he was dying to know the Lord and fear Him
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.”
I Chronicles 28:9 NKJV
The fear of the Lord gives life and protects against death
“Fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain; it offers escape from the snares of death.”
Proverbs 14:27 NLT
The fear of the Lord brings confidence and security
“In the [reverent] fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will [always] have a place of refuge.”
Proverbs 14:26 AMP
“And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.”
1 John 4:17 NLT
The fear of the Lord brings us closer to the perfection of holiness
Therefore, since we have these [great and wonderful] promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, completing holiness [living a consecrated life—a life set apart for God’s purpose] in the fear of God. 2 Cor 7:1
The fear of the Lord brings you into a more intimate knowledge of the Lord and the lore you know Him the more you reverently fear Him
Knowledge and the fear of the Lord go hand in hand
Proverbs 2;5
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7 NKJV
God opens us His secret wealth of knowledge to those who fear Him
When the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord is upon you, you enjoy goodness and prosperity
“Who is the man who fears the Lord [with awe-inspired reverence and worships Him with submissive wonder]? He will teach him [through His word] in the way he should choose.
His soul will dwell in prosperity and goodness, And his descendants will inherit the land.
The secret [of the wise counsel] of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will let them know His covenant and reveal to them [through His word] its [deep, inner] meaning.”
Psalms 25:12-14 AMP
