Stewardship as Service in the household of God and in the community

Spiritual Text

“Be enthusiastic to serve the Lord, keeping your passion toward him boiling hot! Radiate with the glow of the Holy Spirit and let him fill you with excitement as you serve him.”

Romans 12:11 TPT

Just as each one of you has received a special gift [a spiritual talent, an ability graciously given by God], employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace [faithfully using the diverse, varied gifts and abilities granted to Christians by God’s unmerited favour].”

1 Peter 4:10 AMP

Stewardship in the church

One of the major ways of revealing our stewardship is in the church.

How can one serve in the church?

1. Serve God in your present situation and location

“So everyone should continue to live faithful in the situation of life in which they were called to follow Jesus.”

1 Corinthians 7:20 TPT

We often wish we were in a different situation or environment while we fail to see opportunities to serve God around us in our present circumstance

What God needs is a heart that is willing to serve Him regardless of their lot in life

Serve the Lord where you are as you are a steward of your situation.

How well you manage your present situation will determine where next God is going to take you to

Hear what Jesus says in Luke 16:10

“The one who faithfully manages the little he has been given will be promoted and trusted with greater responsibilities. But those who cheat with the little they have been given will not be considered trustworthy to receive more.”

Luke 16:10 TPT

2. Serve with the gifts that have been entrusted into your care

Apostle Paul enumerated the manifestation of different gifts and ministries in the church

“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

I Corinthians 12:4-11 NKJV

So we are to serve with the gifts that grace has bestowed on us

“God’s marvellous grace imparts to each one of us varying gifts. So if God has given you the grace-gift of prophecy, activate your gift by using the proportion of faith you have to prophesy. If your grace-gift is serving, then thrive in serving others well. If you have the grace-gift of teaching, then be actively teaching and training others. If you have the grace-gift of encouragement, then use it often to encourage others. If you have the grace-gift of giving to meet the needs of others, then may you prosper in your generosity without any fanfare. If you have the gift of leadership, be passionate about your leadership. And if you have the gift of showing compassion, then flourish in your cheerful display of compassion.”

Romans 12:6-8 TPT

3. We are stewards of one another in the church

we are to be responsible for each other in the body of Christ

“He has done this intentionally so that every member would look after the others with mutual concern, and so that there will be no division in the body.”

1 Corinthians 12:25 TPT

4. Serve one another with love

Our responsibility towards each other must be out of love

“Be devoted to tenderly loving your fellow believers as members of one family. Try to outdo yourselves in respect and honour of one another.”

Romans 12:10 TPT

5. Be concerned with each other’s interest

“Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.”

Philippians 2:4 TPT

6. Bear one another’s burden

“Bear one another burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2 NKJV

7. Be helpful and hospitable

“Take a constant interest in the needs of God’s beloved people and respond by helping them. And eagerly welcome people as guests into your home.”

Romans 12:13 TPT

We are gifted to contribute towards the growth of all. That’s our stewardship in the body of Christ

“For his “body” has been formed in his image and is closely joined together and constantly connected as one. And every member has been given divine gifts to contribute to the growth of all; and as these gifts operate effectively throughout the whole body, we are built up and made perfect in love.”

Ephesians 4:16 TPT

Stewardship in the community

Jesus wants us to be good stewards of his grace by serving in the community

We can be purposeful stewards through the following ways

1. Be a happy neighbour

“Live happily together in a spirit of harmony, and be as mindful of another’s worth as you are your own. Don’t live with a lofty mindset, thinking you are too important to serve others, but be willing to do menial tasks and identify with those who are humble-minded. Don’t be smug or even think for a moment that you know it all.”

Romans 12:16 TPT

Don’t think you are too important to serve your community

Be willing to do menial tasks

Don’t be a smug

Don’t assume you know more than others

2. Be at peace with everyone for in that way you will be able to serve and fulfil the law of Christ

“If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

Romans 12:18 AMPC

3. Identify with Jesus publicly

Spread the gospel by being the hands, feet, eyes and mouth of Jesus

“Then the King will turn to those on his right and say, ‘You have a special place in my Father’s heart. Come and experience the full inheritance of the kingdom realm that has been destined for you from before the foundation of the world! For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. When you found me thirsty, you gave me a drink. When I had no place to stay, you invited me in, and when I was poorly clothed, you covered me. When I was sick, you tenderly cared for me, and when I was in prison you visited me.’ “Then the godly will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty and give you food and something to drink? When did we see you with no place to stay and invite you in? When did we see you poorly clothed and cover you? When did we see you sick and tenderly care for you, or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will answer them, ‘Don’t you know? When you cared for one of the least of these, my little ones, my true brothers and sisters, you demonstrated love for me.’”

Matthew 25:34-40 TPT

  • I will Let the inner movement of my heart always be to love one another and never play the role of an actor wearing a mask. I will continue to despise evil and embrace everything that is good and virtuous.

  • I receive the grace to live happily with others in a spirit of harmony and be as mindful of another’s worth as I am of my own.

  • I will identify more with Jesus publicly by spreading the gospel as I act as His hand, feet, eyes and mouth to people in my community
